This is just depressing

Via NYTimes article

Certain vinyl baby bibs sold at Toys “R” Us stores appear to be contaminated with lead, laboratory tests have shown, making the inexpensive bibs another example of a made-in-China product that may be a health hazard to children.

More Book Thoughts

Filed under: ponderings, books, research, The Internets, mormon — Ms. Rose @ 3:48 pm

I’m currently reading His Favorite Wife: Trapped in Polygamy.

OK the cover and back book cover reads as though the author Susan Ray Schmidt is abused.  Well, that ain’t the case so far.  Sure, she is neglected, as many child brides of polygamists are. But I feel like the cover and back cover is a bit misleading.  However, I haven’t finished it.  I’m halfway through it so far.

As I’m reading it, I’m learning a lot about fundamental mormon sects.  I find myself wanting to look up these groups on wikipedia or just on google in general, but I feel like I could possibly be ruining important information I could be learning from the text.  Its funny how in the past I would just try to read another book on the subject but now possible answers are immediate.

So far the book is good if not a bit beach readish but its August.  Now is the time!

Crazy New York Week

Filed under: film, about ms. rose, Arts & Entertainment — Ms. Rose @ 9:18 pm

I had a very unique New York City week. Wednesday morning minutes after my husband left for work, he returned saying he received a call from a coworker saying that all the subways were messed up because of a tornado! I heard lightning and thunder at 6 am but slept through most of it.

Every single line was interrupted. From this New York 1 article:

At one point, NYC Transit was urging people to stay home until they could get things sorted out after the severe weather led to massive mass transit delays during the morning rush.

I was lucky that I didn’t have to go into work that day anyway, but all of my friends had hard commutes.

On Thursday, I was lucky enough to have to show up serve for jury duty. I’m not trying to be sarcastic, really. Ha!

Of course, on mta.info the two subway lines that were experiencing residual delays were the two closest to us. I went to wait for the bus which took forever. In Manhattan, buses show up continually. In the outer boroughs, they are on a very tight schedule.

I arrived at the wrong building fifteen minutes late. The guard sent me to the right building where I had just missed the awesome movie about jury duty and how important it is to our government, even more so than voting. I don’t know if I agree with that last statement but, eh, what can you do?

This is what I learned at jury duty: how to correctly perforate my jury duty notice, that the wireless does not let you sign onto social networking sites and that there aren’t enough trials in my borough to keep a roomful of hundred juror’s or so occupied. We got dismissed after two hours! It was amazing. The last time I served jury duty, I had to sit around for two days with long breaks in between.

Everyone quickly lept up and almost ran out of the room, but we had to stand in an orderly line to receive the proof that we had served jury duty. That rocked.

I took off and went to meet my friend for lunch and then went to see a movie. I’ve seen a lot of movies so far this month:

SherryBaby
No End in Sight
The Valet
God Spoke
Maxed Out
Becoming Jane
Grizzly Man
Interview
Two days in Paris

I really need to write about all these movies SOON. But I’m too tired from driving all over rockland, weschester and kings counties (sorry for no lack of caps) today.

Oh how I love Rebecce Traister

Filed under: ponderings, The Rules, dating — Ms. Rose @ 9:07 pm

Something about this NYTimes piece rubbed me the odd way. (Yes, I meant it that way.) My friend sent me this link to the latest Salon Broadsheet in which Rebecca Traister basically sets it all right out there.

OK. So for those of you following along: Selecting a food to eat on a date because you have calculated that ordering it (provided that you are thin) will give the impression that you do not have food issues? That’s a food issue.

Since when is it so lame to order a salad. And if someone is not going to date you because you’re a vegetarian then move on. Of course, this is all easy for me to say, perhaps, but I have not heard of any broken up relationships over someone’s reluctance to order a burger, let alone a gourmet burger.

Or maybe it’s just August and there ain’t much to write about. Because, you know, it summer and all and I’m busy trying to be dainty yet not picky at the same time.

Maybe I should reread The Rules.

The overlying point here seems to be if you want a date, you can’t be yourself. Because what if you really, really want chicken? Then what the eff do you do?

Monthly Book Post # 2

Filed under: books, queer rights — Ms. Rose @ 9:47 pm

Last month, I read some books like I do every month. Wow. That was an inspired opening. I just read A Desired Past by Leila J. Rupp. Its a history of same-sex relationships and love. As a history student, I thought this book was perfectly written. Rupp was very careful to identify her terms with careful definitions. For example, she does not provide the reader with terms homosexual to describe a monolithic group. One of the major threads throughout the book is that “social minorities” like gay people cannot be defined in a vacuum.

She also goes to lengths to explain that people who were identified as lesbians or gay by historians and scholars did not always regard themselves as such. She uses her current relationship with her partner to make parallels that appeal to the reader’s emotion. Rupp does write exquisitely about her relationship to her subjects and it is apparent why she cares and she believes is at stake. One hopes that other scholars can carefully write about subjects that they find integral to their own lives with the same reflection and dedication to reporting the truth that they have worked so hard to uncover.

This book is great for people who want to learn more about GLBT studies, women’s studies, history or to just read a great historical study. I know I will be referring to this as I delve further and further into my own studies.

The new epitome of laziness

Filed under: swift thoughts, The Internets, dating — Ms. Rose @ 11:49 pm

Can’t even do online dating yourself. Found on craigslist:

I am looking for a person to help me find a perfect woman. Do you want to earn $15 an hour searching Match.com for me for a partner? I would like you to perform a targeted Match.com search under my ID, send an introduction note and reply to the responses. I will give you my search criteria and you will do the work for me. I am not sure how many hours it will take you, but I will guarantee a minimum of 25 hours, once I see your work. It could go on much longer if I like the results. I am able to see your progress and will work with you as we go on. I am able to spend 3 hours a night and do not make a dent in the woman in our area. Let me know if you are up to it. Send me an example of a sample message, so I can get an idea of your style. It doesn’t have to be about me. You could tell me if you have had any experience doing something like this. I am a good guy, who just doesn’t have the time to do the searching. I will pay you via PayPal, so you can be sure to get paid. We can set-up a payment plan that suits you.
