I’m glad I missed this:

From here:

ABC and NBC reportedly squared off for bidding rights to her first post-jail interview, but the networks seemed to lose interest after the monetary deal-making became public. That resulted in a promotional windfall for CNN’s “Larry King Live,” which apparently did not have to pay for the sit-down. The network’s strenuous promotion included a countdown clock that ran on “Paula Zahn Now,” the lead-in to King’s show, as well as a lengthy panel postmortem about Hilton on “Anderson Cooper 360.”

Emphasis mine.

Oh and the humidity has fried my brain.

To evidence

Filed under: ponderings — Ms. Rose @ 9:27 pm

What do you all think of the word evidence as a verb?

Once in high school, I used it as a verb and my English teacher told me that it was WRONG WRONG WRONG because evidence is a NOUN!

Well oh my goodness! My dictionary says it can be a VERB!

verb [ trans. ] (usu. be evidenced) be or show evidence of : that it has been populated from prehistoric times is evidenced by the remains of Neolithic buildings.

I was reading a review of A Mighty Heart when I came across evidence used like this and I decided to get to the bottom of it.

Every single person, especially those who publish, write or edit, should own an actual dictionary.

REPEAT! One should own an actual dictionary NOT depend on the internet.

This does not mean I don’t like online dictionaries.

The end.

Don’t Stop Believin’ (found here)
- Journey

Just a small town girl
Living in a lonely world
She took the midnight train going anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train going anywhere

A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

{Refrain}
Strangers, waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Paying anything to roll the dice
Just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

{Refrain}

Don’t stop believing
Hold on to that feeling
Streetlight people

Stressful reading

Filed under: books — Ms. Rose @ 2:54 pm

Lately, I’ve decided to slow down on the “have to read” lists and started reading more for pleasure.

A few weeks ago I picked up Cupcake Brown’s memoir A Piece of Cake. I started reading it last week and OMG this woman had a hard life and I’m not even past age 13. I don’t know if I can continue reading. I like the prose a lot but the rape and child abuse scenes are hard to read. This is nothing but a compliment to Ms. Brown’s writing. Maybe I should read it so I know and understand what society does to a small child lost in the shuffle. But I can barely keep it together while reading it. We’ll see.

The sad thing is this book is just one example of a beyond hard life one experiences when they’re kicked around between foster homes. But she did persevere. Says a lot about the human spirit and resilience.

Maintenance update

Filed under: blogging — Ms. Rose @ 4:35 pm

So I organized some of my tags. All the ones that were labeled hottlinks, media and media are now just labeled as hottlinks. My thinking for this was that its obvious that anything tagged as hottlinks is related to media and pop culture issues because its either a video link or newspaper link.

I still have more organizing to this! (What will I tag this as?)

hanvnah made me do it

Filed under: about ms. rose — Ms. Rose @ 9:13 pm

hanvnah has tagged me to do this days ago and I’m finally getting a chance to do it:
Bloggers must post these rules and provide eight random facts about themselves. In the post, the tagged blogger tags eight other bloggers and notify them that they have been tagged.

(1) I prefer bottled water to be lukewarm as opposed to freezing cold.

(2) I was a teacher’s pet in high school.

(3) Bookstores are my weakness. I cannot go into one without buying something that looks good. Thankfully, I’ve been going to the public library and using their FREE service.

(4) I hate talking on the phone, especially cell phones. I hate how people get offended or confused when the phone breaks up or you lose someone. Its a CELL PHONE DUH!

(5) I used to think blogs were dumb. Now I think they rock.

(6) I enjoy eating meat and don’t like feeling like I have to apologize for it. I didn’t eat read meat for a few years in high school. Once I got to college, I started eating meat because all the peta activist types on campus annoyed me.

(7) I prefer beer to wine.

(8) I like filling these things out way too much.

Um, I don’t have many “blogger” friends but I will tag littlejeans and CoolFace to do this.

Should Have, Would Have, Could Have

Filed under: film, ponderings, pop culture, reproductive rights, Arts & Entertainment — Ms. Rose @ 7:50 pm

So, I’ve been wanting to write about the films Waitress and Knocked Up for a week now but I haven’t found the time.  Well, The NYTimes beat me to it! Well, duh, it’s such an obvious connection but they mostly talked about the reluctance of Hollywood to show a movie with a woman even seriously pondering an abortion.

The aspect of Waitress I enjoyed was that it shows how pregnancy can interrupt a married woman’s life as well.  It helps break the myth in popular culture that if you’re married, any pregnancy is a wanted–even if unplanned– pregnancy.   Knocked UP offers the usual fare of “oops we’re having a baby.” Don’t get me wrong, it was hilarious but the ending didn’t surprise me at all.  I thought it presented a much more honest portrayal of marriage than pregnancy.

But yeah neither film even mentioned the word abortion.  I have researched and written about this topic immensely these past few months, the way abortion is portrayed in pop culture.  So the message is loud and clear, no woman is having an abortion on TV or film.  Sure there’s an abortion storyline every few years on TV but thats every FEW years.  Not matching up with statistics at all.

I watched Children of Men last month on a transatlantic flight.  I knew what it was about but kept thinking that the pro-lifers (the scary ones) must have loved the premise of the film.  Of course, the crazy liberals and their abortions would cause all the women in the world to suffer from infertility.  I did like Children of Men but couldn’t help think of all the hidden (unintended?) messages in it.  And what is it with every “end of the humanity” movie taking place in the UK?  28 Days later…anyone?

I HATE repeating point especially here but I don’t get why fictional TV and movies will deal with EVERY controversial subject except this one.  Or maybe its every American movie…a foreign film that features an abortion, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, just won the Palme d’Or.  But even Maria Full of Grace had its heroine carrying cocaine (i think?) in her belly next to her embryo across the border.  I mean if a drug smuggler can’t have an abortion on film, who can?

Mortgage dancing

Filed under: ponderings — Ms. Rose @ 11:19 pm

Anyone notice the onslaught of advertisements for lower mortgage financing featuring women dancing awkwardly? They all seem to be for LowerMyBills.Com. I guess that’s an advertisement for the company. Oh well.
They’re annoying.

When I googled “mortgage dancing” a whole bunch of blog posts with the same complaints popped up. Here’s an article about it.
