Library raises money with erotica hot line

ASSOCIATED PRESS

This isn’t the typical whispering you might expect to hear at a library.Vienna’s City Hall has launched a “sex hot line” to raise money for the capital’s main public library, officials said Tuesday. It’s unusual, but it’s not particularly raunchy: Callers pay 53 cents a minute to listen to an actress read breathless passages from erotica dating to the Victorian era.

City Hall set up the hot line this month to help the library raise cash for planned remodeling and expansion, Austrian media reported.

Anne Bennent, a famous Austrian stage and film star, reads passages from the Vienna library’s collection of 1,200 works of erotic fiction from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the library said.

Officials said the hot line would be operational through May 31.

Protect the Women’s Bureau

Filed under: women's history, Arts & Entertainment, work — Ms. Rose @ 11:00 am

Found this in my email from the amazing hanvnah:

The Secretary of Labor has slashed funding for the Women’s Bureau-the only federal agency devoted solely to women’s employment issues. This cut will force the agency to reduce or eliminate vital programs that support working women, including the technical assistance Women Work! provides to our national network.

We demand that the Department of Labor restore funding to the Women’s Bureau and we need your signature to show the strength of our network and demonstrate the importance working women’s issues.

Please sign our petition to save the Women’s Bureau! You can either sign online at www.womenwork.org!

I know you guys know a lot of people who support women’s rights so please forward this email to your friends, family, colleagues and other advocates for women’s labor issues.

Go sign it! I already have.

Also, a word about the amazing hanvnah, you should go see this play she worked hard! on at Theatre J.

And you can read all about it here.

The McBealization of TV Women

Filed under: pop culture, Arts & Entertainment, tv — Ms. Rose @ 4:58 pm

I’ve been thinking a lot about the portrayal of single women on television these days. When I was in middle school, I would watch the Mary Tyler Moore Show religiously on Nick at Night (before TVLand existed.) I never got into Murphy Brown but saw the similarities between both shows.

I think the single women’s popularity on TV hit a new level with Allie McBeal, Sex & the City and even TV shows like Will & Grace and Friends.

My two favorite tv shows that predominantly feature women are the Gilmore Girls and Grey’s Anatomy. Last week I watched the latests Grey’s episode where they take the Addison character and set her up for her own show in LA. I always like the Addison character because she came across as professional but also personal but in the right areas. However, during the spinoff, they tried to McBealize Addison and make her act all wacky, not condfident and have her wanting a baby more than anything. I was thisclose to thinking they were going to pull out the dancing baby thing. So glad they didn’t. I still liked the idea of the show but didn’t like this light attempt at character assasination.

The NYTimes also noticed this in their article The New Modern Woman, Ambitious and Feeble. Writer Alessandra Stanley said:

Addison first showed up at the hospital as a coolly amused villainess who intimidated the show’s heroine, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). Over time and plot twists, her character evolved into a more likable colleague, but for some reason, that change required her to become dizzier, chattier and very much like the ever confused and self-doubting Meredith — and, of course, Ally McBeal.

People complain that hip-hop stars use obscene lyrics and lewd music videos to demean women. Sometimes, so do even the most bourgeois women’s television shows.

I think this may deserve its own presentation paper!

A Study of a comedy show in posters

Filed under: comedy, Arts & Entertainment — Ms. Rose @ 12:36 pm

Or why everyone should really go see Delusions of Spandex, smart comedy by smart (HOTT) women!

And their other posters for past shows so you can get a “feel”

This one was a real departure from their other one featuring spandex.  But I personally like the spandex ones the best.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes - Turn and face the strain

Filed under: about ms. rose — Ms. Rose @ 3:59 pm

Another question from the Imagination Prompt Generator:

Make a list of five ways you’ve changed in the last five years. What changes do you wish to make in the next five years?

(1) I decided to become a historian.  I got an M.A.  Now all I need is that Ph.D. Better get to it!

(2) I went from being certain I would never marry and decided to become a 35 year old single adoptive mother to being a 25 year old married girl/woman/chick.  Hmmm?!! I used to say I never wanted to be married because it didn’t interest me but I was afraid I’d never find anyone who would make me happy enough.  Well I did.

(3) I learned how to love myself.  I can’t say I’m completely in love with myself yet but I’m really trying here.  I realize I have flaws but that I also have great qualities that set me a part from others.  I’m still trying to prove to myself that I’m worth it.

(4) I started speaking up for myself to people who had hurt me emotionally.  This ended some of my friendships but also made many stronger.  I learned the hard way who my real friends are but its all been worth it so far.

(5)  And a superficial difference that ended my superficiality (or at least part of it), I stopped reading Us magazine in October of 2005 and haven’t read it since. My reading of actual literature and nonfiction works has gone up radically.

In the next five years, I’d like to

  • Move to the midwest for a short or long time.
  • Have a child or start that process.
  • Become healthy before I have said child above.
  • Be admitted to a graduate school program so I can pursue my career aspirations.
  • Learn Dutch or at least be able to read it.
  • Have a happy and meanigful marriage.
  • Remain friends with the ones I have now.
  • Stay close with my family and be a part of my younger cousin’s life.
  • Continue to fight for women’s rights and feminism.
  • Save the world!

Quick linx

Awesome line:

So it may be time to step back from all this girl-power cheermongering and recognize a simple fact: Women don’t just need to be free to aspire; they also need to be free to just be. Yes, women can be every bit as good as men in track or mathematics, but we don’t have to excel in either to deserve respect as human beings. Wait, haven’t a bunch of feminists been telling us that all along? Duh!

From The Supergirl Syndrome by Lakshi Chaudhry

And I just found out about The Scholar & Feminist Online from Feministing.

I can’t wait to start reading.
